Galesburg's code is broad: “No person shall engage in the business of collecting, transporting or disposing of refuse of any type within the city without first obtaining a license therefor” (§ 58-62). Licences come from the city clerk, need proof of insurance and expire on December 31 (§§ 58-63, 58-64), and we found no exclusive trash contract. Occupying a street with materials or machinery takes a permit from the superintendent, a cash deposit and an insurance policy (§ 66-63).

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Galesburg

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Licence for refuse of any type — collecting, transporting or disposing of refuse of any type in the city takes a City licence (§ 58-62).
  • Insurance on file — haulers show proof of minimum liability insurance when working in the city (§ 58-42).
  • Rubbish to licensed haulers — rubbish is disposed of only to a licensed hauler, burning exceptions aside (§ 58-23).
  • Street permit — occupying a street with materials or machinery needs the superintendent's permit, a cash deposit and insurance (§ 66-63), with barricades lit from sunset to sunrise (§§ 66-64, 66-65).
  • Nothing on the street — rocks, concrete, rubble, garbage, refuse or debris may not be placed on a street (§ 66-87).
  • Winter parking — no street parking between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. from October 15 to April 15 (§ 70-51(a)).

What comes out of Galesburg properties

Galesburg's bulk drop-off day, at the dumpsters behind the Department of Public Works at 130 Division Street, is for residents inside city limits with ID, and takes no regular household trash, paint cans or liquids, tires, auto parts or construction materials. A remodel or a roof is container work, and the code says rubbish goes only to a licensed hauler (§ 58-23). Small clean-outs, garage projects and general household debris fit a 10 (about 3 pickup loads); medium renovations and yard work a 15 (4 to 5 loads); roofing, remodeling and larger home projects a 20 (about 6); large clean-outs and commercial jobs a 30 (about 9); and demolition, construction and large-scale projects a 40 (about 12). Concrete and dirt usually go in a 10 or a 15 only — heavy materials have weight limits for safe transport, and tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste get heavy quickly. Michigan's solid waste law counts “demolished building materials” as rubbish (MCL 324.11505(9)), and household waste doesn't include construction and demolition waste (MCL 324.11504(3)) — remodel debris is container work, not cart work. The standard rental is 3 to 7 days. Need longer? Call and we can often extend it, and we'll explain any added daily or weekly fee up front. Finish early? Call and we'll arrange an early pickup.

What goes in: wood, drywall, tile and flooring, furniture and household junk, yard waste, branches and brush, roofing shingles and small non-hazardous appliances, with concrete and dirt usually in a 10- or 15-yard container. What doesn't go in: paint, solvents and oils, fuel, tires, batteries, asbestos, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, and fridges, AC units and other appliances with refrigerants — that's our own list. Michigan's landfill ban list backs much of it up: used oil, lead-acid batteries, bulk liquid waste and asbestos waste (unless the landfill meets the federal asbestos rule) may not go to a landfill, and neither may more than a de minimis amount of whole tires, used beverage containers or yard waste (MCL 324.11514). So load yard waste on its own: a yard-waste container takes no household trash mixed in. If you're unsure about something, call before it goes in. Our what can and can't go in a dumpster in Michigan guide covers the rest. Household hazardous leftovers go to the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center, 1301 Lamont Ave in Kalamazoo, which serves County residents and participating communities, with eligible small businesses by appointment — call 269-373-5211 for hours and what it takes.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Galesburg

Who may haul: “No person shall engage in the business of collecting, transporting or disposing of refuse of any type within the city without first obtaining a license therefor” (§ 58-62, Ord. No. 204). Licences are issued by the city clerk on the City's forms, with the hauler's name, local address and phone, its main office if the local one is a branch, and proof of insurance (§ 58-63); the clerk has up to 45 days to decide (§ 58-65), and a licence expires on December 31 each year (§ 58-64) and can't be transferred. Haulers show proof of minimum liability insurance when working in the city (§ 58-42) and file quarterly reports with the licensing agent (§ 58-44). The City keeps the right to use municipal crews or a private contractor (§ 58-20), but we found no exclusive contract. City Hall is at 200 E Michigan Ave, 269-665-7000.

In the street: “No person shall occupy any street with any materials or machinery incidental to the construction, demolition or repair of any building adjacent to said street, or for any other purpose, without first obtaining a permit from the superintendent and posting a cash deposit and filing an insurance policy” (§ 66-63). The permittee barricades or guards the spot (§ 66-64), with barricades lit from sunset to sunrise (§ 66-65); rocks, concrete, rubble, refuse and debris may not be placed on any street (§ 66-87); and the City's right-of-way use permit, for activity that may hinder traffic on a paved road without damaging it, is filed at the City Clerk's office. Driveway first. You don't need to be home as long as we know where the container goes and the spot is clear of vehicles and obstacles — mark it with cones or tape if you won't be there. Leave about 60 feet of clear approach for the truck and about 25 feet of overhead clearance, free of wires and branches, on flat, solid ground such as a driveway or pavement. Ask about boards for driveway protection.

Hauling and parking: no one hauls waste on a street unless the vehicle is built and kept so nothing leaks, sifts, drops, spills or blows from it (§ 58-45), and there's no street parking from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. between October 15 and April 15 (§ 70-51(a)).

Across the county line: EGLE's hauler guidance says waste taken out of the Michigan county where it was generated, into another county for handling, must be allowed under both counties' solid waste management plans.

State and local licences: EGLE says Michigan's solid waste rules don't require a licence, permit or registration from EGLE to haul solid waste, but some areas require a local licence or have their own operating rules — which is why the local rules on this page matter.

State highways: Michigan requires an MDOT permit for any use of state highway right-of-way other than normal travel, and cities and villages can require their own permits on their streets (MCL 247.322). We keep containers off state trunkline right-of-way — I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 and BL I-94 among them — and place them on private property beside those roads.

Covered loads: Michigan law bars driving a vehicle on a highway unless it's built or loaded so its contents can't drop, sift, leak, blow off or otherwise escape, and a load that isn't completely enclosed must be covered or fastened down (MCL 257.720). Keep debris below the top rim — an overfilled container may not be legal or safe to haul.

Remodel or tear-down: EGLE's Air Quality Division runs the federal asbestos NESHAP program in Michigan. Its fact sheet says residential dwellings of four units or less under private control or ownership aren't subject to the NESHAP, but regulated demolition — even of a facility with no asbestos — needs notice at least ten working days before work starts, filed through EGLE's MiEnviro portal. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if an inspection finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Galesburg

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address and the town — the rules follow the town the property is in — what you are clearing, whether a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard or a job site, what is going in, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

We recommend the most cost-effective size, so you do not pay for space you will not use or call for another pickup, and you get a clear, flat-rate price that can cover delivery, pickup, disposal and the standard rental period of 3 to 7 days. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size. If your town restricts who may haul or wants a permit, we check its rules before booking.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on flat, solid ground rather than the lawn, with protective boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep everything below the top rim and keep the problem items out — paint, solvents and oils, fuel, liquids and hazardous chemicals, tires, batteries, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, asbestos, and fridges or A/C units that still hold refrigerant. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal

Call or message us when it is full or the job is done and we arrange prompt pickup. We work with local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling.
