The 20 yard container in Battle Creek
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is often the answer — it is one of our most popular sizes, with a strong balance of volume, footprint and value for residential and light commercial jobs. Whole-home cleanouts, multi-room renovations, kitchen and bath remodels, roofing, large landscaping jobs and light demolition all fit it. It holds about 20 cubic yards, roughly six pickup truck loads or 110 to 130 standard 33-gallon bags.
It is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits many two-car driveways and job sites, and it loads easily over the 4.5-foot sides. For a project that makes debris over several days it is the dependable do-it-all container.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck to back in, and about 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of wires and branches
Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, bags and mixed junk from a whole house; drywall, lumber, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches, shrubs and green waste from a big landscaping job; framing, doors and windows from light demolition — these are 20 yard jobs. Roofing is where the 10 and the 20 earn their keep: they are the sizes people book for shingles, tar paper and roofing debris, with the weight checked first.
In Marshall, the size itself is the rule. The City's dumpster permit application says "A permit is required for any dumpster 20 yards or more", asks where the dumpster will sit with a sketch of the property, and says "Regardless of dumpster size, if the dumpster is to be placed in the City's Right-of-Way, a separate Right-of-Way permit is required." The City notifies applicants within 10 business days. So in Marshall we check the City's rules before booking. Wherever the job is, we work with local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling.
What the 20 yard includes
Flat-rate pricing that can include delivery and pickup, disposal up to the included weight — usually 3 to 4 tons, depending on the debris — and a standard rental period of 3 to 7 days, with no hidden fuel or surprise fees. Need it longer? We can often extend it for a daily or weekly fee. Tile, plaster, shingles and wet green waste add up, so plan by weight as well as volume, load evenly front to back and side to side, and keep everything below the top rail. For concrete, soil or brick, ask about a 10 yard or a split load. Protective boards go under the rails on request.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home cleanouts
- Kitchen, bath and multi-room renovations
- Roofing, with the weight checked first
- Large landscaping and storm cleanup
- Light demolition: framing, doors and windows
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile (a 10 handles the weight better)
- Major demolition and commercial volume — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus the truck approach
- Asbestos, paint, solvents, fuels, tires, batteries or medical waste
Placing a 20 yard container in Battle Creek
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck to back in, and about 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of wires and branches. The driveway comes first. On a Battle Creek street, the code bars placing any object in the street - which runs from property line to property line and takes in the lawn extension and the sidewalk - except temporary obstructions while things are moved to and from the property (§§ 1020.01, 1020.02(a)). The City's fee schedule lists right-of-way permits for lane and road closures and obstructions, and we found no City rule that names dumpsters. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Elsewhere the street rule is written down too: Kalamazoo needs a right-of-way permit "for things like placing a dumpster at the street", applied for at least 10 business days ahead; Portage bars putting "building and construction materials/equipment" on a street "unless written approval therefore is granted by the director of community development", with a bond or insurance filed first (§ 66-3(a)); Marshall wants a separate right-of-way permit for a dumpster in the City's right-of-way, whatever its size; Galesburg (§ 66-63) and Richland (§ 28-40) want a permit before materials occupy a street; Union City allows nothing on a street for more than 24 hours without Council approval (§ 91.01); and Bellevue wants trash containers kept covered and at least five feet back from the road (§ 109-9). MDOT requires a permit from anyone who wants to use state highway right-of-way for anything other than normal vehicle or pedestrian travel (it manages that right-of-way under Public Act 200 of 1969 and the Encroachment Act), so we keep containers out of the right-of-way of I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 or the I-94 Business Loop. In Marshall, any dumpster of 20 yards or more needs a City dumpster permit. Check any neighborhood association rules too. Protective boards can go under the rails on request. Each city page covers its own rules.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Not covered here? Call (269) 292-6313 and ask.
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
Roughly six, or 110 to 130 bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Battle Creek driveway?
In many — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide and fits many two-car driveways, and the truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach and about 25 feet of clearance overhead. Put it on the driveway or a pad rather than the lawn.
What is the typical weight limit on a 20 yard?
Usually 3 to 4 tons, depending on the material. Shingles, tile, concrete, dirt and wet yard waste are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not. We can estimate tonnage from your project materials.
Do I need a permit for a 20 yard in Marshall?
Marshall's City dumpster permit is required for any dumpster of 20 yards or more, and a separate right-of-way permit is needed if it sits in the City's right-of-way, whatever its size. On Michigan Avenue and M-227 the City's right-of-way form says an MDOT permit is needed. We check the City's rules before booking.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Often, depending on the schedule and location. Same-day or next-day delivery is available when availability allows — call early in the day for the best chance. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
