Roll-off dumpster rental in Portage

Approx. 30 road miles west-southwest of the yard, around 38 minutes.

Portage is approx. 30 road miles west-southwest of the yard, around 38 minutes. Same-day or next-day when availability allows, once we've checked the City's rules for the job. Portage is a city of 48,891 at the 2020 Census, in Kalamazoo County.

“Portage has moved to a single-hauler waste collection system.” Under § 58-35 (Ord. No. O-1-2025), the City's contractor is “the only person, company, firm, or organization other than the city authorized to provide residential pickup and disposal/processing services” — for household trash, bulk waste, yard waste and recyclables at single-family, two-family and three-family homes. Construction and demolition waste is defined separately, and apartment buildings, mobile home parks and other non-residential properties make their own arrangements (§ 58-35(d)). The code doesn't name roll-offs, and a household clean-out at a 1 to 3 unit home is the closest call, so we check the City's rules before booking.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Portage

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • One contractor for homes — the City's contractor is the only one besides the City authorized to provide residential pickup and disposal at 1 to 3 unit homes (§ 58-35(c)).
  • Construction waste defined separately — construction and demolition waste counts as household trash only in quantities that fit the containers provided for collection (§ 58-35(a)).
  • Other properties arrange their own — apartments, mobile home parks and other non-residential properties make independent arrangements (§ 58-35(d)).
  • Street needs written approval — materials or equipment on a sidewalk, street or alley need the director of community development's written approval, with a bond or insurance filed first (§ 66-3(a)).
  • Trucks on residential streets — vehicles over 1½ tons don't park an hour or more on a residential street unless they're servicing the area (§ 78-2(b)).
  • Winter curb rule — from December 1 to March 15, no parking on or within five feet of the traveled street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. (§ 78-2(a)).

What comes out of Portage properties

Portage's residential carts don't take construction waste, auto parts, tires or household hazardous waste, and the code counts construction and demolition waste as household trash only in quantities that fit the containers provided for collection (§ 58-35(a)). Remodel, roof and tear-out debris goes in a container — after we've checked the City's rules for your address. Small clean-outs, garage projects and general household debris fit a 10 (about 3 pickup loads); medium renovations and yard work a 15 (4 to 5 loads); roofing, remodeling and larger home projects a 20 (about 6); large clean-outs and commercial jobs a 30 (about 9); and demolition, construction and large-scale projects a 40 (about 12). Concrete and dirt usually go in a 10 or a 15 only — heavy materials have weight limits for safe transport, and tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste get heavy quickly. The standard rental is 3 to 7 days. Need longer? Call and we can often extend it, and we'll explain any added daily or weekly fee up front. Finish early? Call and we'll arrange an early pickup.

What goes in: wood, drywall, tile and flooring, furniture and household junk, yard waste, branches and brush, roofing shingles and small non-hazardous appliances, with concrete and dirt usually in a 10- or 15-yard container. What doesn't go in: paint, solvents and oils, fuel, tires, batteries, asbestos, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, and fridges, AC units and other appliances with refrigerants — that's our own list. Michigan's landfill ban list backs much of it up: used oil, lead-acid batteries, bulk liquid waste and asbestos waste (unless the landfill meets the federal asbestos rule) may not go to a landfill, and neither may more than a de minimis amount of whole tires, used beverage containers or yard waste (MCL 324.11514). So load yard waste on its own: a yard-waste container takes no household trash mixed in. If you're unsure about something, call before it goes in. Our what can and can't go in a dumpster in Michigan guide covers the rest. Household hazardous leftovers go to the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center, 1301 Lamont Ave in Kalamazoo, which serves County residents and participating communities, with eligible small businesses by appointment — call 269-373-5211 for hours and what it takes. The City confirms Portage residents can drop off household hazardous materials there without added fees.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Portage

Who may haul — we check first: “As authorized by MCL 324.11901—324.11908, the city council has determined that the use of an exclusive contractor for neighborhood pickup (for single family residential dwelling units) and disposal/processing of MSW, bulk waste, yard waste and/or recyclablewaste for residential dwelling units will protect the public health, safety and welfare” (§ 58-35(b)), and “The contractor shall be the only person, company, firm, or organization other than the city authorized to provide residential pickup and disposal/processing services herein within the legal jurisdiction city” (§ 58-35(c)). Residential covers single-, two- and three-family dwellings; construction and demolition waste is defined separately; and “All non-residential properties … shall make independent arrangements” (§ 58-35(d), Ord. No. O-1-2025). The City's collector-registration section is now partly reserved (§ 58-33), and its refuse-bin rules leave out roll-off containers (§ 58-32(a)). We check the City's rules before booking a container in Portage — City Hall is at 7900 S Westnedge Ave, 269-329-4400. We're licensed & insured.

In the street: “No person shall place any merchandise, material or other items, including building and construction materials/equipment, on a sidewalk, street or alley, unless written approval therefore is granted by the director of community development”, limited to the minimum number of days needed, barricaded as the director prescribes, and with a bond or insurance policy filed with the city clerk first (§ 66-3(a)). The right-of-way itself is off limits except as the chapter permits, temporary obstructions incidental to moving things to and from the property aside (§ 66-2(b)). Lane restrictions need at least 72 hours' notice to Transportation and Utilities, (269) 329-4422. Driveway first. You don't need to be home as long as we know where the container goes and the spot is clear of vehicles and obstacles — mark it with cones or tape if you won't be there. Leave about 60 feet of clear approach for the truck and about 25 feet of overhead clearance, free of wires and branches, on flat, solid ground such as a driveway or pavement. Ask about boards for driveway protection.

Trucks and winter: “It shall be unlawful to park for a period of one hour or more any semi-tractor, trailer, truck or other motor vehicle rated at more than one and one-half tons carrying capacity on any public street, or other public place within a residentially zoned area”, with vehicles “immediately engaged in servicing a residential area” exempt (§ 78-2(b)). From December 1 to March 15 there's no parking on or within five feet of the main traveled street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. (§ 78-2(a)), and handling containers or building materials in a way that makes a noise disturbance is barred (§ 24-93(8)).

Across the county line: EGLE's hauler guidance says waste taken out of the Michigan county where it was generated, into another county for handling, must be allowed under both counties' solid waste management plans.

State and local licences: EGLE says Michigan's solid waste rules don't require a licence, permit or registration from EGLE to haul solid waste, but some areas require a local licence or have their own operating rules — which is why the local rules on this page matter.

State highways: Michigan requires an MDOT permit for any use of state highway right-of-way other than normal travel, and cities and villages can require their own permits on their streets (MCL 247.322). We keep containers off state trunkline right-of-way — I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 and BL I-94 among them — and place them on private property beside those roads.

Covered loads: Michigan law bars driving a vehicle on a highway unless it's built or loaded so its contents can't drop, sift, leak, blow off or otherwise escape, and a load that isn't completely enclosed must be covered or fastened down (MCL 257.720). Keep debris below the top rim — an overfilled container may not be legal or safe to haul.

Remodel or tear-down: EGLE's Air Quality Division runs the federal asbestos NESHAP program in Michigan. Its fact sheet says residential dwellings of four units or less under private control or ownership aren't subject to the NESHAP, but regulated demolition — even of a facility with no asbestos — needs notice at least ten working days before work starts, filed through EGLE's MiEnviro portal. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if an inspection finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Portage

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address and the town — the rules follow the town the property is in — what you are clearing, whether a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard or a job site, what is going in, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

We recommend the most cost-effective size, so you do not pay for space you will not use or call for another pickup, and you get a clear, flat-rate price that can cover delivery, pickup, disposal and the standard rental period of 3 to 7 days. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size. If your town restricts who may haul or wants a permit, we check its rules before booking.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on flat, solid ground rather than the lawn, with protective boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep everything below the top rim and keep the problem items out — paint, solvents and oils, fuel, liquids and hazardous chemicals, tires, batteries, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, asbestos, and fridges or A/C units that still hold refrigerant. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal

Call or message us when it is full or the job is done and we arrange prompt pickup. We work with local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling.
