Roll-off dumpster rental in Marshall

Approx. 10 road miles east-southeast of the yard, around 14 minutes.

Marshall is approx. 10 road miles east-southeast of the yard, around 14 minutes. Same-day or next-day when availability allows, once we've checked the City's rules for the job. Marshall is a city of 6,822 at the 2020 Census, and Calhoun County's Recycling and Solid Waste office is here, in the County Building at 315 W Green St.

Marshall's contractor is “the only person allowed to provide residential refuse collection and disposal services within the city” (§ 50.05), for homes of fewer than four units (§ 50.01). The code puts construction waste in its commercial definition, and the exclusive contract doesn't mention roll-offs either way. What the City says plainly is on its own form: “A permit is required for any dumpster 20 yards or more”, and a dumpster in the City's right-of-way needs a separate right-of-way permit whatever its size. So we check the City's rules before booking.

How we reach Marshall

Approx. 10 road miles east-southeast of the yard to Marshall, around 14 minutes. Same-day or next-day when availability allows, once we've checked the City's rules and any dumpster permit — call early in the day for the best chance. The City says it notifies dumpster-permit applicants within 10 business days unless it says otherwise, so allow for that on a 20-yard or bigger. The phone is answered 24/7.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Marshall

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Exclusive household trash — the City's contractor is the only one allowed to provide residential refuse collection, for dwellings of fewer than four units (§§ 50.05, 50.01).
  • Dumpster permit at 20 yards — the City's Dumpster Permit Application requires a permit for any dumpster of 20 yards or more, with a reply within 10 business days.
  • Separate street permit — a dumpster of any size in the City's right-of-way needs its own right-of-way permit, with 72 hours' notice before work starts.
  • Michigan Ave and M-227 are MDOT's — the City's form sends work in the Michigan Avenue (BL I-94) and M-227 rights-of-way to MDOT for a permit.
  • Bulk day limits — the City's single 2027 bulk pickup day caps loads at 3 cubic yards and refuses demolition material, drywall, concrete, plaster and shingles.
  • Compost Center — 619 Homer Road, for City residents, surrounding townships' residents and local contractors; no construction materials, stumps or concrete.

What comes out of Marshall properties

Marshall's own bulk day won't take a remodel: the single 2027 bulk pickup, on Saturday 15 May, is capped at 3 cubic yards and refuses “Building demolition material; drywall, concrete, plaster, shingles”. The City's brush program won't pick up material left from a tree or lot being commercially cleared, removed or pruned either (§ 50.12(D)). The City's dumpster permit starts at 20 yards; a 10 or a 15 placed in the right-of-way still needs a right-of-way permit. Small clean-outs, garage projects and general household debris fit a 10 (about 3 pickup loads); medium renovations and yard work a 15 (4 to 5 loads); roofing, remodeling and larger home projects a 20 (about 6); large clean-outs and commercial jobs a 30 (about 9); and demolition, construction and large-scale projects a 40 (about 12). Concrete and dirt usually go in a 10 or a 15 only — heavy materials have weight limits for safe transport, and tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste get heavy quickly. The standard rental is 3 to 7 days. Need longer? Call and we can often extend it, and we'll explain any added daily or weekly fee up front. Finish early? Call and we'll arrange an early pickup.

What goes in: wood, drywall, tile and flooring, furniture and household junk, yard waste, branches and brush, roofing shingles and small non-hazardous appliances, with concrete and dirt usually in a 10- or 15-yard container. What doesn't go in: paint, solvents and oils, fuel, tires, batteries, asbestos, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, and fridges, AC units and other appliances with refrigerants — that's our own list. Michigan's landfill ban list backs much of it up: used oil, lead-acid batteries, bulk liquid waste and asbestos waste (unless the landfill meets the federal asbestos rule) may not go to a landfill, and neither may more than a de minimis amount of whole tires, used beverage containers or yard waste (MCL 324.11514). So load yard waste on its own: a yard-waste container takes no household trash mixed in. If you're unsure about something, call before it goes in. Our what can and can't go in a dumpster in Michigan guide covers the rest. Household hazardous leftovers go to Calhoun County's yearly household hazardous waste collection — 2026's was on 14 September at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds in Marshall. It's for County residents only and takes no trash, tires, yard waste, construction or demolition waste, appliances or business waste; Calhoun County Recycling and Solid Waste is on 269-969-6395. Marshall's Compost Center at 619 Homer Road (2026 season 7 April to 14 November) takes yard waste from residents, surrounding townships' residents and local contractors, but no construction materials, stumps or concrete; Calhoun County's Marshall Recycling Center is at 13300 15 Mile Road.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Marshall

Who may haul — we check first: “The city council shall, either by advertising for bids or otherwise, enter into an exclusive contract, with the mutual consent of the contractor, who shall be licensed, … to collect and dispose of residential refuse in the city … The contractor shall be the only person allowed to provide residential refuse collection and disposal services within the city” (§ 50.05, Ord. 2020-13). Residential service means premises with dwellings of fewer than four units, and commercial garbage service “includes construction waste” (§ 50.01). The code doesn't say whether a roll-off falls under the contract, and Chapter 50 refers to licensed haulers without a licensing section of its own. Businesses register with the City Clerk (§ 110.03). We check the City's rules before booking a container in Marshall. We're licensed & insured.

Dumpster permit: the City's Dumpster Permit Application says “A permit is required for any dumpster 20 yards or more.” It asks for the company delivering the dumpster, the reason for it, where it will sit (driveway, next to garage) and a sketch of the property showing the spot; the City replies within 10 business days, and once the invoice is paid the permit is issued and work may begin. The applicant line reads “Name of Owner or Company”. Check the current fee with the Building Department, 269-781-3985 x1501.

In the street: “Regardless of dumpster size, if the dumpster is to be placed in the City's Right-of-Way, a separate Right-of-Way permit is required.” The right-of-way permit needs 72 hours' notice before work starts, and work in the Michigan Avenue (BL I-94) and M-227 rights-of-way needs an MDOT permit. No one may obstruct a street, alley, sidewalk or public place “except as may be temporarily permitted by the city manager, or while loading or unloading” (§ 90.15), and the City can remove an obstruction at the landowner's cost (§ 90.18). Driveway first. You don't need to be home as long as we know where the container goes and the spot is clear of vehicles and obstacles — mark it with cones or tape if you won't be there. Leave about 60 feet of clear approach for the truck and about 25 feet of overhead clearance, free of wires and branches, on flat, solid ground such as a driveway or pavement. Ask about boards for driveway protection.

Demolition: a tear-down needs a City of Marshall demolition permit and, if applicable, a soil sedimentation and erosion permit through the Calhoun County Road Department (§ 150.122(A)).

Downtown: since 14 September 2026 the City has provided contracted dumpsters in enclosures in parking lots 9 and 10 for downtown businesses at 102–120 E and 101–155 W Michigan Ave.

State and local licences: EGLE says Michigan's solid waste rules don't require a licence, permit or registration from EGLE to haul solid waste, but some areas require a local licence or have their own operating rules — which is why the local rules on this page matter.

State highways: Michigan requires an MDOT permit for any use of state highway right-of-way other than normal travel, and cities and villages can require their own permits on their streets (MCL 247.322). We keep containers off state trunkline right-of-way — I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 and BL I-94 among them — and place them on private property beside those roads.

Covered loads: Michigan law bars driving a vehicle on a highway unless it's built or loaded so its contents can't drop, sift, leak, blow off or otherwise escape, and a load that isn't completely enclosed must be covered or fastened down (MCL 257.720). Keep debris below the top rim — an overfilled container may not be legal or safe to haul.

Remodel or tear-down: EGLE's Air Quality Division runs the federal asbestos NESHAP program in Michigan. Its fact sheet says residential dwellings of four units or less under private control or ownership aren't subject to the NESHAP, but regulated demolition — even of a facility with no asbestos — needs notice at least ten working days before work starts, filed through EGLE's MiEnviro portal. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if an inspection finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Marshall

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address and the town — the rules follow the town the property is in — what you are clearing, whether a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard or a job site, what is going in, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

We recommend the most cost-effective size, so you do not pay for space you will not use or call for another pickup, and you get a clear, flat-rate price that can cover delivery, pickup, disposal and the standard rental period of 3 to 7 days. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size. If your town restricts who may haul or wants a permit, we check its rules before booking.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on flat, solid ground rather than the lawn, with protective boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep everything below the top rim and keep the problem items out — paint, solvents and oils, fuel, liquids and hazardous chemicals, tires, batteries, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, asbestos, and fridges or A/C units that still hold refrigerant. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal

Call or message us when it is full or the job is done and we arrange prompt pickup. We work with local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling.

Not covered here? Call (269) 292-6313 and ask.

Can I get a roll-off in Marshall?

Yes. We check the City's rules before booking a container in Marshall, because the City's contractor holds the exclusive residential trash contract (§ 50.05) and the City needs a dumpster permit for 20 yards and up. Call (269) 292-6313 with the address and the job.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Marshall?

Will Marshall's bulk day take my remodel debris?

No. The 2027 bulk pickup day caps loads at 3 cubic yards and refuses building demolition material, drywall, concrete, plaster and shingles.
