Residential Dumpster Rental across Southwest Michigan
Homes around here vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. A tight driveway on an older Battle Creek street wants a 10 or a 15 set down carefully; a bigger lot in Springfield, Richland or out past Marshall may have room for a 20 or a 30. For many home renovations and move-outs a 15 or 20 yard is the best balance of capacity and space, and the first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.
Most residential jobs are one of five things: a cleanout (a garage, an attic, an estate, or a house before a move or downsizing), a remodel (kitchen, bath, basement, flooring), a roof or DIY project, or the yard — landscaping or storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers, the home cleanout guide covers the planning, and the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container
Cleanouts lead the way: furniture, boxes, old decor and household junk from a garage, an attic, a basement or a whole house before a move. Remodels are next — drywall, flooring, cabinets and fixtures from a kitchen, a bath, a basement or a whole-home upgrade. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, branches, shrubs, soil and sod from a garden makeover or a storm.
The alternative is the curbside cart, and it only goes so far. In Battle Creek, single-family homes get weekly trash collection, but the City's bulk pickup does not take construction and demolition materials, tires or roof shingles, and the Brice Pit compost site on West River Road takes leaves, grass, brush and limbs from City residents only — no stumps, no construction materials and no contractor dumping. Springfield residents get one bulk item a month, scheduled through the City. Kalamazoo's four yearly bulk pickups stop at 7.5 cubic yards and take no construction or renovation materials. Instead of multiple trips, a roll-off takes the whole job in one go.
Driveway placement, street rules and the town you live in
The driveway comes first. A driveway, pad or other flat, hard surface works best, and protective boards can go under the rails on request — or lay plywood or boards under the contact points yourself. The truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach and about 25 feet of clearance overhead. If you will not be home, mark the spot with cones, tape or chalk and send us a photo.
The street is another matter. On a Battle Creek street, the code bars placing any object in the street - which runs from property line to property line and takes in the lawn extension and the sidewalk - except temporary obstructions while things are moved to and from the property (§§ 1020.01, 1020.02(a)). The City's fee schedule lists right-of-way permits for lane and road closures and obstructions, and we found no City rule that names dumpsters. So the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Elsewhere the street rule is written down too: Kalamazoo needs a right-of-way permit "for things like placing a dumpster at the street", applied for at least 10 business days ahead; Portage bars putting "building and construction materials/equipment" on a street "unless written approval therefore is granted by the director of community development", with a bond or insurance filed first (§ 66-3(a)); Marshall wants a separate right-of-way permit for a dumpster in the City's right-of-way, whatever its size; Galesburg (§ 66-63) and Richland (§ 28-40) want a permit before materials occupy a street; Union City allows nothing on a street for more than 24 hours without Council approval (§ 91.01); and Bellevue wants trash containers kept covered and at least five feet back from the road (§ 109-9). MDOT requires a permit from anyone who wants to use state highway right-of-way for anything other than normal vehicle or pedestrian travel (it manages that right-of-way under Public Act 200 of 1969 and the Encroachment Act), so we keep containers out of the right-of-way of I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 or the I-94 Business Loop. Each city page says what that town asks for.

Residential dumpster rental — the Michigan specifics
Michigan law bans certain things from landfills (MCL 324.11514): more than a de minimis amount of yard waste, whole tires or used beverage containers, and any used oil, lead-acid batteries, regulated hazardous waste, bulk liquids, medical waste (with exceptions) and asbestos waste, unless the landfill meets the federal asbestos rule. Our own list keeps out the rest — paint, solvents and oils, fuel, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, asbestos, and fridges or A/C units that still hold refrigerant. Household paint and chemicals belong at a household hazardous waste collection: Calhoun County holds a collection day for county residents, and the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center at 1301 Lamont Ave takes residents of Kalamazoo County and participating communities. On an older house, check the roof and flooring before they come off: EGLE runs the federal asbestos rule (NESHAP) in Michigan. "Residential dwellings containing four units or less under private control or ownership would not be subject to the NESHAP", but other regulated demolitions need notice through EGLE's MiEnviro Portal at least ten working days before work starts - even when no asbestos is present. Asbestos still never goes in our roll-offs. If you are unsure about an item, call before loading it — the what can and cannot go in guide says where the rest goes.

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered
Not covered here? Call (269) 292-6313 and ask.
Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
We take precautions to help protect your property, and protective boards can go under the rails on request. If you are concerned, you can also place plywood or boards under the contact points before delivery — ask when you book so it is planned.
Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?
Only where the town allows it, and it is never the first plan. In Battle Creek the code bars objects in the street other than temporary obstructions while things are moved to and from the property, and we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Kalamazoo needs a right-of-way permit for a dumpster at the street, Portage needs written approval and a bond or insurance (§ 66-3(a)), and Marshall needs a right-of-way permit. On a state highway an MDOT permit is needed, so we keep containers off state highway right-of-way. The driveway is always simpler.
Does my neighborhood association have a say?
It may. Association rules can cover containers on your lot, and we do not know your association's rules — let us know about them when you book, along with any tight driveway or limited access, and we plan the delivery around them.
Can I put old appliances or a mattress in the dumpster?
A mattress, yes. Small non-hazardous appliances, yes. A fridge, freezer or A/C unit only once the refrigerant has been properly handled — tell us what the appliance is when you book.
How long can I keep the container?
A standard rental period of 3 to 7 days, set on your quote. Need longer? Call and we can often extend it for a daily or weekly fee. Finished early? Call and we arrange an early pickup.
