Roll-off dumpster rental in Kalamazoo

Approx. 27 road miles west of the yard, around 35 minutes.

Kalamazoo is approx. 27 road miles west of the yard, around 35 minutes. Same-day or next-day when availability allows; call early in the day for the best chance of same-day. Kalamazoo is a city of 73,598 at the 2020 Census — the biggest city we serve.

The City runs curbside recycling, bulk and yard-waste service from its Solid Waste Millage, but “Regular household trash service is not provided by the city and must be arranged privately.” We found no refuse-hauler licence or exclusive trash contract in the City's code or its list of business licences. The rule that matters for a roll-off is the street: the City's permit page lists “placing a dumpster at the street” among the things that need a Right-of-Way Permit, and asks for applications “at least 10 business days before approval is needed.”

How we reach Kalamazoo

The phone is answered 24/7. A street spot waits on the City's right-of-way permit, which the City asks for at least 10 business days ahead — driveway drops don't.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Kalamazoo

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Private household trash — household trash is arranged privately; we found no City hauler licence or trash franchise.
  • Dumpster at the street — needs a City Right-of-Way Permit; the application form has a “Dumpster” box, and approval can take up to 10 days.
  • Permit conditions — the permit stays on site, a bond is provided as required, and the City gets 72 hours' notice before work starts.
  • Bulk limits — four free bulk pickups a year, up to 7.5 cubic yards each, with no construction or renovation materials; none downtown or for buildings of five or more units.
  • Heavy vehicles in residential zones — vehicles over 10,000 lb aren't parked in residential districts except while performing a service at the property (§ 36-163(D)).
  • Quiet hours — collectors don't collect within 300 feet of a dwelling between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. (§ 15A-20.1).

What comes out of Kalamazoo properties

Kalamazoo's bulk pickup comes four times a year, up to 7.5 cubic yards each time, and won't take “Rocks, sand, glass, concrete, or construction/renovation materials”; properties downtown and buildings of five or more units don't get curbside bulk at all. The code also keeps rocks, concrete, rubble and similar building materials out of the City's own collection (§ 31-18(2)). That's where a roll-off comes in. Small clean-outs, garage projects and general household debris fit a 10 (about 3 pickup loads); medium renovations and yard work a 15 (4 to 5 loads); roofing, remodeling and larger home projects a 20 (about 6); large clean-outs and commercial jobs a 30 (about 9); and demolition, construction and large-scale projects a 40 (about 12). Concrete and dirt usually go in a 10 or a 15 only — heavy materials have weight limits for safe transport, and tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste get heavy quickly. Michigan's solid waste law counts “demolished building materials” as rubbish (MCL 324.11505(9)), and household waste doesn't include construction and demolition waste (MCL 324.11504(3)) — remodel debris is container work, not cart work. The standard rental is 3 to 7 days. Need longer? Call and we can often extend it, and we'll explain any added daily or weekly fee up front. Finish early? Call and we'll arrange an early pickup.

What goes in: wood, drywall, tile and flooring, furniture and household junk, yard waste, branches and brush, roofing shingles and small non-hazardous appliances, with concrete and dirt usually in a 10- or 15-yard container. What doesn't go in: paint, solvents and oils, fuel, tires, batteries, asbestos, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, and fridges, AC units and other appliances with refrigerants — that's our own list. Michigan's landfill ban list backs much of it up: used oil, lead-acid batteries, bulk liquid waste and asbestos waste (unless the landfill meets the federal asbestos rule) may not go to a landfill, and neither may more than a de minimis amount of whole tires, used beverage containers or yard waste (MCL 324.11514). So load yard waste on its own: a yard-waste container takes no household trash mixed in. If you're unsure about something, call before it goes in. Our what can and can't go in a dumpster in Michigan guide covers the rest. Household hazardous leftovers go to the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center, 1301 Lamont Ave in Kalamazoo, which serves County residents and participating communities, with eligible small businesses by appointment — call 269-373-5211 for hours and what it takes.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Kalamazoo

Who may haul: we found no collector licence or registration in the City's garbage and solid waste chapters (Ch. 15A, Ch. 31), no refuse-hauler licence among the City's business licences, and no exclusive-hauler provision. Collectors working in the City don't collect within 300 feet of a dwelling between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., clean up anything they spill, and a company supplying containers puts its name and phone number on them (§ 15A-20.1); vehicles carrying rubbish show the owner's name (§ 36-82). The code text comes from the City's online code host as a summary, so it's paraphrased here. We're licensed & insured.

In the street — permit first: “You need a Right-of-Way Permit for things like placing a dumpster at the street, repaving a driveway, repairing sidewalk, or any utility or infrastructure work.” The City asks for applications “at least 10 business days before approval is needed”; the paper form has boxes for “Dumpster” and “Storage Container (PODS)” and goes to Public Services at the Stockbridge Facility, 415 Stockbridge Ave, (269) 337-8601. The permit stays on site, a bond is provided as required, the City gets at least 72 hours' notice before work starts, and the work site follows the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The code bars placing an encumbrance in or over a street, alley or sidewalk except under a City licence or permit (§ 33-2). Driveway first. You don't need to be home as long as we know where the container goes and the spot is clear of vehicles and obstacles — mark it with cones or tape if you won't be there. Leave about 60 feet of clear approach for the truck and about 25 feet of overhead clearance, free of wires and branches, on flat, solid ground such as a driveway or pavement. Ask about boards for driveway protection.

Bins on private lots: the code wants a City permit before a metal container of one cubic yard or more sits away from the usual setback on a lot (§ 15A-2C). It's written for permanent bins, and it doesn't say whether it applies to a temporary roll-off.

Trucks: no commercial vehicle, trailer or truck over 10,000 lb is parked in a residential zoning district, except one performing a service at the property for the time the job reasonably takes (§ 36-163(D)); nothing parks on a paved City street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. without a permit (§ 36-170); and loads that could blow or spill are covered and secured (§ 36-81).

Across the county line: EGLE's hauler guidance says waste taken out of the Michigan county where it was generated, into another county for handling, must be allowed under both counties' solid waste management plans.

State and local licences: EGLE says Michigan's solid waste rules don't require a licence, permit or registration from EGLE to haul solid waste, but some areas require a local licence or have their own operating rules — which is why the local rules on this page matter.

State highways: Michigan requires an MDOT permit for any use of state highway right-of-way other than normal travel, and cities and villages can require their own permits on their streets (MCL 247.322). We keep containers off state trunkline right-of-way — I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 and BL I-94 among them — and place them on private property beside those roads.

Covered loads: Michigan law bars driving a vehicle on a highway unless it's built or loaded so its contents can't drop, sift, leak, blow off or otherwise escape, and a load that isn't completely enclosed must be covered or fastened down (MCL 257.720). Keep debris below the top rim — an overfilled container may not be legal or safe to haul.

Remodel or tear-down: EGLE's Air Quality Division runs the federal asbestos NESHAP program in Michigan. Its fact sheet says residential dwellings of four units or less under private control or ownership aren't subject to the NESHAP, but regulated demolition — even of a facility with no asbestos — needs notice at least ten working days before work starts, filed through EGLE's MiEnviro portal. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if an inspection finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Kalamazoo

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address and the town — the rules follow the town the property is in — what you are clearing, whether a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard or a job site, what is going in, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

We recommend the most cost-effective size, so you do not pay for space you will not use or call for another pickup, and you get a clear, flat-rate price that can cover delivery, pickup, disposal and the standard rental period of 3 to 7 days. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size. If your town restricts who may haul or wants a permit, we check its rules before booking.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on flat, solid ground rather than the lawn, with protective boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep everything below the top rim and keep the problem items out — paint, solvents and oils, fuel, liquids and hazardous chemicals, tires, batteries, gas cylinders and propane tanks, medical waste, asbestos, and fridges or A/C units that still hold refrigerant. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal

Call or message us when it is full or the job is done and we arrange prompt pickup. We work with local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Kalamazoo?
