What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Battle Creek, MI Guide
The 20 yard is our most requested size. How to choose between 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards by volume, weight and driveway space in Battle Creek.

If you have never rented a dumpster, this is the page to read first. It covers the whole process from the phone call to the pickup, with the Battle Creek, Calhoun County and Michigan specifics that national guides leave out.

Whether you are remodeling a kitchen, clearing out a garage, replacing a roof, running a construction job or cleaning up after a storm, a roll-off puts all the debris in one place instead of trip after trip to a disposal site. The payoff is a cleaner, safer property, fewer runs and one flat-rate cleanup. In Battle Creek it matters more than you might think: the City's bulk pickup does not accept construction and demolition materials, tires or roof shingles, yard waste goes out only in bags or small containers from April through December, and burning leaves is prohibited. Brice Pit takes yard waste from City residents only, never construction materials. Remodels make more debris than people expect, and roof tear-offs, estate cleanouts, landscaping and demolition fill a box quicker than a trailer.
You call, tell us about the project and the address, and choose a size with our help. You get a flat-rate quote that can include delivery, pickup and disposal and the standard rental period of 3 to 7 days. We deliver to your home, business or job site, often same-day or next-day when available. You fill it with approved debris, keeping it below the top rim, and when you are done you call us and we pick it up. You do not need to be home for delivery or pickup, as long as we know where to place the dumpster and the area is clear of vehicles and obstacles.
Our yard is at 923 E Michigan Ave, on E Michigan Ave on Battle Creek's east side. The US Census geocoder places it in Emmett Charter Township, Calhoun County, just outside the City limits. Battle Creek had 52,721 people at the 2020 Census and Calhoun County 134,310. We are locally owned, and the approx. road distance from the yard to the Census point for Battle Creek is 5 miles, around 8 minutes.
Start with the job, then check the weight. A 10 yard, about 14 feet long, suits small remodels, roofing and heavy material such as concrete and dirt. A 15, about 16 feet, suits garage cleanouts, flooring and yard debris. The 20, 30 and 40 share a length of about 22 feet and get taller: the 20 for renovations, roofing and landscaping, and our most requested size; the 30 for whole-home cleanouts and large remodels; the 40 for commercial construction and demolition. All are about 7.5 feet wide. Weight allowances run from 1–2 tons on a 10 up to 5–6 tons on a 40, depending on the debris. The sizing guide has the full table.
Inside Battle Creek, single-family homes get weekly City trash collection through a City contract that is exclusive for residential refuse only (§ 1064.43), and anyone in the business of hauling other people's refuse needs a City licence (§ 1064.44). Springfield uses the same model (§§ 36-136, 36-137), and Emmett Charter Township, where our yard sits, requires its own hauler licence (§ 42-51). Calhoun County runs a recycling and solid waste program, a yearly household hazardous waste day and residential scrap tire collections; we found no County hauler licence. The State sets the landfill bans (MCL 324.11514) and the secured-load rule (MCL 257.720), and EGLE says it does not license ordinary solid waste haulers.
The County's draft Materials Management Plan says that as of 2026 all cities in the county have single hauler contracts for trash and recycling. That is why a roll-off for a remodel, a roof, a move-out or a construction site is usually booked with the address in hand and the town's rules checked first.
Driveway first. In Battle Creek we found no dumpster-specific street permit: City Code § 1020.02(a) bars obstructions in the street, with an exception for temporary obstructions while moving things to and from the property, and the City's fee schedule has a right-of-way line for obstructions that does not name dumpsters. So for a street spot we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. On a building site, § 1064.17 requires containers for the debris, with loose refuse containerized at the end of each day. Trucks of four tons or more keep to posted truck routes except to reach a destination (Rule 501). State trunkline right-of-way needs an MDOT permit for any use other than normal travel, so we keep containers off I-94, I-194, M-66, M-96, M-37, M-89, M-227 and BL I-94 right-of-way. The permit guide covers every town.
Battle Creek § 1064.44, Springfield § 36-137 and Emmett Township § 42-51 each require a hauler licence for anyone collecting or hauling other people's waste. Battle Creek licensees' vehicles carry the name, phone number and vehicle number in letters at least four inches high on both sides (§ 1064.48), and residential collection runs from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. (§ 1064.55(k)). Albion (§ 66-61) and Galesburg (§ 58-62) require City licences, and Vicksburg requires a Village licence for residential garbage (§ 389-18).
Portage, Marshall, Climax, Augusta and Union City have exclusive or mandatory residential collection, so we check the City's or the Village's rules before booking there, and in Marshall a dumpster of 20 yards or more needs a City permit. In Homer, Athens and Tekonsha we found no rule online and check with the Village. The permit guide has the sections. We're licensed & insured.
In: wood, drywall, tile and flooring, carpet and pad, cabinets, countertops and vanities, doors and windows, furniture and household junk, roofing shingles and underlayment, small non-hazardous appliances, pallets, packaging and cardboard, yard waste, and concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and dirt within the weight limits of a 10 or 15. Out: paint, solvents and oils, fuel and other hazardous liquids, tires, batteries, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders, propane tanks and other pressurized tanks, medical waste, asbestos, and appliances that still hold refrigerant unless properly handled. Michigan law keeps used oil, lead-acid batteries and asbestos waste out of landfills, along with more than a small amount of whole tires, yard waste or used beverage containers (MCL 324.11514). The full guide says what to do with each instead.
EGLE's Air Quality Division runs the federal asbestos program (NESHAP) in Michigan, and notifications go through the MiEnviro Portal. EGLE says demolition is subject to the notification requirement even for facilities with no asbestos, with notice entered at least ten working days before regulated demolition or renovation begins. Its fact sheet also says residential dwellings of four units or less under private control or ownership are not subject to the NESHAP. That does not take a home outside every rule: Michigan bans asbestos waste from any landfill that does not meet the federal disposal rule (MCL 324.11514(2)(h)).
Asbestos never goes in our roll-offs. If an older home may have it, have it checked before the tear-out starts.
Michigan law says solid waste may go only to a licensed disposal area (MCL 324.11512(2)). Every load on the road must be built or loaded so nothing drops, sifts, leaks, blows off or escapes, and an open load must be covered or tied down (MCL 257.720). Inside Battle Creek, a licensee's vehicle covers must be in position and secured while hauling (§ 1064.55(a)). Keeping a clean concrete or brick load apart from household junk helps, because clean loads are easier to recycle, and yard waste is best as its own load.
We work with local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling.
The rules change once you leave Battle Creek. Next door are Springfield (pop. 5,292; approx. 5 road miles), Marshall (6,822; 10), Augusta (864; 12), Climax (712; 14) and Bellevue (1,308; 16, in Eaton County). In Kalamazoo County are Galesburg (2,049; 17), Richland (946; 18), Kalamazoo (73,598; 27), Portage (48,891; 30) and Vicksburg (3,706; 34). To the south and east are Albion (7,700; 22), Homer (1,575; 32), Tekonsha (653; 23), Athens (936; 18) and Union City (1,714, mostly in Branch County; 21). Populations are 2020 Census counts and miles are approx. road miles from our yard. See the service area, or the Battle Creek page for home.
Spread materials evenly from front to back and side to side, break bulky pieces down, and keep debris below the top rim: if a dumpster is overfilled, it may not be legal or safe to haul. Keep the path clear for pickup. Need more time? Call; we can often extend your rental and explain any added daily or weekly fee, or swap a full box for an empty one. Contractors can ask about recurring job-site service and scheduled rotations. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime and do not promise night or Sunday service.

No. The City's bulk pickup does not accept construction and demolition materials, tires or roof shingles, and the City contractor is not required to collect construction waste. A roll-off is the usual answer for a remodel.
