Why a cleanout needs its own dumpster

Dragging a cleanout to the curb a few bags at a time, or making trip after trip to a disposal site, drains your weekends. Battle Creek's curbside service is weekly trash for single-family homes, and its bulk pickup does not accept construction and demolition materials, tires or roof shingles. Springfield picks up one bulk item per month. Kalamazoo's free bulk pickups take up to 7.5 cubic yards, four times a year, and no construction or renovation materials. Tekonsha's regular service does not pick up large items such as chairs, couches and mattresses; for those you call the Village office. A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in one pickup.

Match the size to the house

For a garage or single-room cleanout, a 10 is often enough; a 15 yard handles garage, attic and basement cleanouts and multi-room cleanouts, and is great for moving. For many move-outs, a 15 or a 20 offers a great balance of capacity and space. A whole-home cleanout is usually a 20 yard, which handles bulky items and volume, or a 30 yard for estate or move-out cleanouts with a lot of furniture, mattresses and mixed junk. Warehouse and office cleanouts can call for a 40. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.

Plan, sort and work room by room

Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through four piles, keep, donate, drop-off and toss, before anything goes in the bin. The drop-off pile is the short one: car batteries and tires, paint, solvents and chemicals, old motor oil, propane tanks, and fridges, freezers or AC units that still hold refrigerant cannot go in the box. Having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of maybe items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage.

  • Garage and storage: old tools, broken equipment, leftover building materials; tires, car batteries, fuel and old motor oil go to the drop-off pile.
  • Kitchen: cabinets, small appliances and cookware you no longer use; fridges and freezers go elsewhere (below).
  • Bedrooms and closets: furniture, mattresses, clothing and boxes can all go in, or to donation.
  • Attic and basement: stored boxes, old decor, keepsakes to sort; paint cans and chemicals to the drop-off pile.
  • Yard: branches, shrubs, old fencing, patio furniture; brush and leaves best as their own load.

Time it to the job

The standard rental period is 3 to 7 days, which covers most single-house cleanouts, and your quote confirms the days. Need longer? Call; we can often extend your rental and explain any added daily or weekly fee, or swap a full box for an empty one. Finish early and we will arrange an early pickup. You do not need to be home for delivery or pickup, as long as we know where to place the dumpster and the area is clear, which helps when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town.

Plan the yard work too. Michigan bans more than a small amount of yard waste from landfills (MCL 324.11514(1)(d)), Battle Creek prohibits burning leaves, and the City collects yard waste only in bags or small containers from April through December. Brice Pit takes brush and limbs from City residents only. A cleanout with a lot of brush is easier with a separate yard waste load.

What cleanout junk can go in

Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, mattresses, boxes and general junk, clothing, old flooring and carpet, cabinets, small non-hazardous appliances, and cardboard kept flat and together. Load smart: break down bulky items, spread the weight evenly front to back and side to side, fill the gaps with smaller pieces, and keep debris below the top rim, because an overfilled dumpster may not be legal or safe to haul. If the cleanout turns into a remodel, with cabinets coming off the walls or flooring coming up, tell us, and do not mix dirt or concrete in with household junk without checking first.

Set these aside, and where they go

A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. Car batteries may not go to a Michigan landfill (MCL 324.11514(2)(b)); ask the Calhoun County Recycling and Solid Waste program, 269-969-6395, where to take them. Whole tires are limited to a de minimis number (§ 11514(1)(c)); Calhoun County holds residential scrap tire collections of up to 10 tires. Used motor oil is banned too (§ 11514(2)(a)). Paint, solvents, cleaners and pesticides go to the Calhoun County household hazardous waste day for county residents, or the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center on Lamont Ave. Propane tanks and gas cylinders stay out. Fridges, freezers and AC units stay out while they hold refrigerant, unless properly handled. TVs and computers: call first. Usable furniture and household items can be donated, and our junk removal team looks for donation options for reusable items when appropriate. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.

Driveways, HOAs and the street

The driveway is the spot. Flat, solid ground works best, and plywood or boards under the contact points help protect it; protective boards may be available on request. If your home is in an HOA or a condominium association, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day and let us know about any tight access or steep drive.

Who hauls matters too. Battle Creek requires a City licence for anyone in the business of hauling other people's refuse (§ 1064.44), and the City's exclusive trash contract covers residential refuse only (§ 1064.43). We found no City permit written for a dumpster in the street, so the driveway comes first, and for a street spot we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Nearby, Portage (§ 58-35) gives one contractor household trash and bulk waste from homes of one to three units, Climax (§ 26-20), Augusta (Ord. 188) and Union City (§ 52.05) have exclusive or mandatory residential collection, and Marshall (§ 50.05) has an exclusive residential contract and a permit for any dumpster of 20 yards or more, so in those we check the City's or Village's rules before booking. The permit guide has every town we list.

Delivery day, or let us do the lifting

Our dumpsters are driveway-friendly. Give us flat, solid ground with about 60 feet of approach for the truck and about 25 feet of overhead clearance, move cars out of the way, and mark the spot with cones, tape or chalk if you will not be there. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime and do not promise night or Sunday service. If you would rather not load it yourself, ask about our junk removal service; large cleanout projects are priced on volume, debris type and logistics. Call (269) 292-6313 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way: in many areas around Battle Creek we offer same-day or next-day delivery depending on availability.

Frequently asked questions

Not covered here? Call (269) 292-6313 and ask.

What size dumpster do I need for a house cleanout?

For a whole-home cleanout, a 20 yard is the usual fit, or a 30 for an estate or move-out cleanout with a lot of furniture. A garage or attic usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.

Can I throw away furniture and mattresses?

Yes. Furniture, mattresses, clothing and household junk can all go in a roll-off. Keep car batteries, tires, used oil, paint and chemicals, propane tanks and appliances that still hold refrigerant out.

What about an old fridge or freezer?

Set it aside. Refrigerant appliances stay out of our boxes unless properly handled. Ask about our junk removal service, which takes appliances where accepted and properly prepared.

How long can I keep a cleanout dumpster?

The standard rental period is 3 to 7 days, and your quote confirms the days. If you need more time, call; we can often extend your rental and explain any added daily or weekly fee. Finish early and we will arrange an early pickup.
